Diablo III: First Impressions

Ok. I finally bought Diablo 3 and started playing last night. Here are 10 things I think about the game as of right now. These may change as the game progresses.

1. The graphics are better than I thought. Sometimes I feel like it really is a Diablo game, but sometimes I am just thinking "wow this doesn't look right".

2. The animations for the armors aren't very good.

3. Colors are too saturated.

4. I have had a lot of fun playing it so far though.

5. It was awesome when RyDub joined my game last night. The multiplayer seems to be working very well so far.

6. My character feels slow. I don't remember them being this slow in D2. Maybe I am wrong? Also, there is no stamina now which is cool I guess. What the hell is this latency thing though?

7. I guess the new potion system works, but I do not like picking up "health orbs". What is this some arcade game?

8. It is kind of cool that we get so many more armor choices (shoulders, wrists, protective cups etc...). It was overwhelming at first though.

9. The new town portal system has a 10 sec cast time. I get it, but in D2 you would sometimes be up against 100s of enemies at once and needed a 0.1 sec town portal to get out of there. D2 was so fast and action packed it was nuts. I don't see this game getting that way. Of course, I am not even done with Act 1 in normal difficulty yet.

10. I do not understand the new skill system at all. How do you customize your character? You unlock skills as you level up, but the skills themselves don't seem to level up so unless all of the skills are perfectly balanced, everyone will end up just using the most powerful skills no? Also, you can get runes to modify these skills, but I don't get that either. Runes have levels as well. Why wouldn't everyone just use the best runes? My thoughts on the whole skill system as of right now are best presented here.

  1. 1. Graphics are cool. Especially if you press Z to zoom in on your character.

    2. Yeah, they don't seem very varied.

    3. No comment

    4. Good.

    5. It works wonderfully. At any time, i can just join yours, you can join mine, we can open it to the public. Many choices.

    6. I think it feels slow because the resolution is bigger. With D2 it was only 800x600 so it felt like you were moving much faster. That's what i think anyway.

    7. I'm not a huge fan either but it augments the new potion system. They could've kept the potions the way they were and got rid of orbs.

    8. I didn't get a neck piece for FOREVER!

    9. It definitely gets nuts later. This is where health orbs do help though.

    10. I don't always use the most powerful spells. Sometimes it's nice to use a slow down spell or something defensive in place of the powerhouse spell. Also, against different enemies in different areas, different spells can be more effective.

  2. Yes I found the "z" trick. Cool. The more I think about it, the more I am not liking the skills/stats system. I am so worried that it has ruined the game.

  3. I am now just venting. I am already thinking about quitting playing. I am just not sure I can allow this skill system to ruin the game like this. How can everything be based off of weapon damage? What if I don't want to use a weapon? I don't see any freedom here. Expect more posts...

  4. Your stats still go up every time you level. You're gonna use a weapon, that's a moot point. I definitely still enjoy the game regardless of the new skill system. I do think it would be cooler if the skill damage just leveled up with you, but it's really almost the same as weapon damage because you're going to be finding new weapons all the time anyway.

Also, who knows, a future patch could change this too. I think they will be handling D3 kinda like they do with WoW, meaning they're constantly watching how things work, will nerf certain abilities if they are abused, and even change how things work if they find that maybe it shouldn't be that way. Don't give up 2 days into it.
