I just watched the Baxter again after a some time away from the film. I now see why some of those out there in cyber-land didn't fall in love with the film. I still love it, but I now understand where you are coming from.
While writing this last night I realized I had absolutely no content. The example that I will cite is when Michael Showalter tells Cecil "I must tell you that I am also reading the dictionary" it is just too weird for most folks.
