Son brought home a cabbage plant from school. pretty small right now, just a few leaves. ~ 6 in. high. I've got it in a clear plastic fast-food type solo cup. need to buy a bag of potting soil. been saving most of the plastic 2 liters and milk jugs in a large trashbag after rinsing since Nashville doesn't have a established city-wide recycling service.
our library system also has a seed library program.
figuring out how to do this in our covered, very shady patio.
Grow light buying guide, The Sweethome and their sister site The Wirecuttter do good work. recently picked up into the NYTimes fold:

We're south facing on a ground floor with two basic windows and an enclosed patio with a welded-in waist high metal fencing.
