So, "Pokémon GO" just went live in the U.S. recently and I think I'm going to introduce it to the kids today. They've already stumbled on the whole Pokémon thing already. I showed Eoin the trailer yesterday and I think he's sold.
Basically, it uses the GPS on your Android/iOS device and you walk around to find pokemon in the real world. The concept follows along with one I've liked for a long while. It's sort of like geocaching. Have any of you ever tried that? There used to be this other game where you'd install a bit of dittle app/plugin to your internet browser and it would create an extra layer to all of the web where each individual website and some other what-not was a virtual sort of battlefield where you could lay traps for other players or do some other sort of treasure hunting. I cant't remember, and I never got into it.

Yes! Very fun. Did you ever play Ingress? This uses the same "portals" and is made by the same company. Gabe and I drove around yesterday and found a lot. It's super fun.
ReplyDeleteNope, haven't played ingress before.
DeleteI was just able to get a Pokemon account today around dinner time. Those must be some very busy servers. We hit up one touristy Rainforest Cafe where yet another hip waiter post-age-25 asked me if I'd caught anything and I heard the word Zubat out loud for the first time since highschool. He was also superb at everything else he was doing. I tipped him 30% and dropped the username on the receipt.
So far, with the exception of Ryan's feedback, the only people I'm aware of that play this are twenty-somethings and older who work in sociable jobs involving good food.
Oh dude, everyone is playing this. I was in downtown Normal this weekend for the Sugar Creek Arts Festival and just about every other person had their phone out. Older people too. Saw a handful of 40 something dads catching some Mons. It's nuts. Ashleigh and I went for a walk in downtown Bloomington last night and we ran into 10 people playing. Everyone is so friendly and helpful. One dude told me they found an Electabuzz a couple blocks away but he was really powerful so make sure to bring some great balls. Dude was 30.
Deletewhats the highest trainer level you've heard of. Katy knows of this one kid who is in the 400's
DeleteTrainer level? 23 is the highest I've seen, but Pokemon level I've seen 1400. Here's my top mons http://i.imgur.com/xcpuLLV.png
DeleteA bunch of guys at the downtown restaurant/hotel are playing this too each minute they can squeeze it in.

ReplyDeletePokemon Go is a brilliant concept. I love the exploration aspect of it.
