Toms coffee (for real)

Inspired by the recent inspirational posts from cp.  For my birthday my sister in law Nikki bought me coffee from Toms.  Yes, that is the shoe company.

Toms buys a week of fresh water for someone in the country the beans come from for every bag of coffee you buy.  I suppose that means I am the savior to 4 lucky people this week.  That being said, I have only tried the one on the far right so far.  And damn was it good.  I am going to try 2 more of them today.  I can post with updates.

The one I tried is Malawi.  It is supposedly a light roast, but seemed more medium to me.

ps.  I need to work on my blogging skills.  Its been too long.  I'm about to get all crazy blog up on dis bitch.

  1. I also recently realized I was bad at brewing coffee. I was brewing at 185 degrees fahrenheit. Coffee is supposed to be brewed between 195-205.

  2. Fahrenheit (symbol °F) is a temperature scale based on one proposed in 1724 by the physicist Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit (1686–1736), after whom the scale is named.

In case anyone else was curious why such a german looking word is used for our temperature scale.

  3. Do experiment with that temperature setting. Maybe it depends on the method of brew and coarseness of grind? The aeropress recommends 185 I believe, but I am not sure what is best. I have always wanted to try and measure the difference in flavor between ultra fine and coarse grinds to see how much "flavor" they give to your cup of joe. Obviously the limit of ultra-coarse (no grinding at all) would impart little flavor, but does the other limit of ultra-fine (turkish powder like) impart all the flavor?

  4. I think the main concern with grind and temperature are with ensuring you are not over extracting the beans. Over extraction can be caused by many things, and leads to bitter coffee.

  5. I would say for 12 dollars, the malawi is a definite buy. I haven't gotten in to enough of the others yet, but maybe a hold on some of them.

They seem to be above average over all, but not quite great. But they seem pretty great at the price point.

tldr: Really good for the price. Pretty good overall. If you want to try before you buy come on down!
