I just found this article on blu-ray audio formats and thus will end up eventually getting a 7.1 receiver, so I can have truly lossless audio http://forum.ecoustics.com/bbs/messages/34579/464956.html
I believe in truly lossless audio, but I do not think that it has too much to do with 7.1 surround sound. 7.1 surround sound is like 5.1 surround sound, but with two speakers at your sides. You could have two less channels and have lossless sound with Blu-Ray, or better yet, 6.2 surround sound!
